Recycling Program to Stop Accepting Certain Plastics

Due to fluctuating market conditions, the City of Pocatello Sanitation Department’s curbside recycling program will no longer be accepting certain types of plastic.

Western Recycling, the City’s contractor for recyclable materials, recently notified City staff that effective immediately the only plastic that will be accepted are bottles marked with the recycling symbol of #1 PET or #2 HDPE. The definition of a bottle is the opening must be smaller than the base, such as water bottles, milk jugs, laundry soap bottles, or soda bottles. In addition, bottles must not exceed more than 2 gallons in capacity.

“We apologize for the inconvenience the change may cause,” said Debbie Brady, Recycling Coordinator. “Staff would also like to thank the residents of Pocatello for their continued support of the curbside recycling program.”

No plastic that is marked with a #3 through #7 recycling symbol, such as yogurt cups or cottage containers, can be placed in curbside recycling autocarts.

Deli trays and clamshell containers that are marked with a #1 PET will not be accepted as they are a different type of PET.

The City’s curbside recycling program is still accepting newspaper, tin cans, aluminum, cardboard and other approved items.
